Caldwell 63, most commonly known as the Helix Nebula (or NGC 7293), is a world-renowned planetary nebula located approximately 655 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius. It is one of the closest planetary nebulae to Earth, offering a detailed glimpse into the final stages of stellar evolution.

Discovery:
It was first discovered by German astronomer Karl Ludwig Harding around 1824.
Nicknames:
Due to its striking circular appearance, it is often called the “Eye of God”or the “Eye of Sauron”.
Formation:
It was created when a Sun-like star exhausted its nuclear fuel and shed its outer layers of gas into space. The remaining hot core, a white dwarf, ionises the surrounding gas, causing it to glow brilliantly.
Dimensions:
The nebula spans roughly 2.5 light-years in diameter and has an estimated age of approximately 10,600 years.
