Melotte 15

Heart of the Heart Nebula

Melotte 15 is a young, exceptionally bright open star cluster, estimated to be roughly 1.5 million years old, positioned at the very center of the famous Heart Nebula (IC 1805) within the constellation Cassiopeia. Located at a distance of about 7,500 light-years from Earth, this remarkable cluster contains numerous massive, highly energetic stars that actively sculpt and shape the surrounding gas clouds. These powerful stars are responsible for driving the nebula’s intense, vibrant red emission, which makes the cluster and its surrounding nebula stand out vividly in the night sky. The entire cluster spans an area approximately 15 light-years across.

Key Characteristics

location:

Situated in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way, within the Heart Nebula (IC 1805).

stellar population:

Contains massive, hot stars, some up to 50 times the mass of the Sun, along with many smaller, dimmer stars.

Physical Features:

The intense radiation and stellar winds from these stars have carved the surrounding gas into dramatic, complex shapes.

Discovery:

Discovered by William Herschel on November 3, 1787.
